Digital transformation of daily activities

The internet and data revolution came upon India, and especially the big metros, during the early 21st century. The explosion of information readily available at a click of a button took everyone's breath away. The telecom companies quickly latched on and got into 3G and 4G to make even more content available to the users. The customers quickly lapped up all this content.

While this huge consumption of data, and even more is coming in the near future, was welcome, we skipped a generation on educating the consumers about the ethics of usage. The parents and grandparents had come up reading books, magazines, newspaper and letters. And suddenly we had email, and pdf books, and news on TV channels and on mobiles.

Our education system took a long time to catch up with the changing trends in how information and data was being consumed. Our focus was on Information reaching people. But knowledge, which comes with comprehension and self-introspection, was lost totally.

The gap between knowledge and information has led us into an era where new ways of misinformation, twisted facts, cyber-crime and even emotional torture (by trolls and indiscriminate rising of views without any accountability) have become issues beyond just debates. Governments are leading efforts to curb "social media" and even legislate how data is used (GDPR, Information Privacy, Information Ownership).
